By Augustine Masamba, BASEflow Project Officer

BASEflow recently visited the Tiyeni Organisation in Mulanje, Malawi, joined by a team of Trocaire partners (CADECOM and CICOD) and government officials from Chikwakwa, Balaka, and Machinga districts. The aim was to appreciate the innovative practice of deep bed farming, poised to revolutionize agricultural productivity and groundwater recharge and sustainability. The learning was part of the Irish Aid Civil Society Program (ICSP), which BASEflow is implementing with funding from Irish Aid through Trocaire.

Tiyeni M&E specialist France Gondwe showcasing the benefits of deep bed farming on crop output

During the visit, the team witnessed the remarkable implementation of deep bed farming at Tiyeni. This innovative technique involves constructing raised beds filled with organic materials, significantly enhancing soil structure and fertility. The results? Increased crop yields and improved water retention—crucial benefits in areas facing water scarcity. Farmers are not just growing more food; they are also conserving vital water resources, creating a win-win situation for both agriculture and the environment.

The insights gained from Tiyeni are already taking shape in Machinga. CADECOM-Zomba has taken the lead in rolling out deep bed farming technology, particularly in the Traditional Authorities of Chamba and Mposa. With two demonstration fields established, local farmers are being empowered to adopt this innovative approach. Our goal is clear: enhance food security and promote sustainable practices that protect our environment while reducing soil erosion and degradation.

The organic materials used in deep bed farming play a crucial role in binding the soil and preventing erosion during heavy rains. By mitigating these risks, we are nurturing a healthier ecosystem that supports long-term agricultural viability and groundwater sustainability.

In conclusion, BASEflow’s learning visit to Tiyeni highlights the transformative potential of deep bed farming in Malawi. By marrying agricultural innovation with groundwater recharge and environmental health, we are paving the way for a resilient and productive farming future.
