The GVH Nsiyama is currently undergoing a significant transformation with the construction of the Manduwasa water supply scheme funded by Irish Aid through Trocaire under the Irish Aid Civil Society Program. The recently completed 1.5 km network system will provide approximately 315 households with access to clean and potable water for the first time, marking a major step forward in improving the livelihoods of the communities.
What does this mean for the Nsiyama community? One of the immediate benefits of the water supply scheme is guaranteed access to clean drinking water for all residents of Nsiyama. Previously, the community relied on distant sources of shallow wells that were often contaminated. The new system will ensure a consistent supply of safe drinking water, significantly reducing waterborne diseases and enhancing overall health. Other expected benefits include the empowerment of women and children, more time for economic opportunities, and increased community engagement and ownership.
Fatima Adam, a divorced woman living with a disability along with her two grandchildren, expressed her concerns: “In the past, we used to fetch water from a shallow well about 600 meters away. My granddaughter would sometimes be late for school just to make sure we had enough water for the household, which adversely affected her studies. We frequently spent hard-earned resources to seek medical attention due to the quality of water we used. With this new project and having a tap right outside my house, my grandchild will dedicate more time to participate in school activities.”
The local community has been actively involved in the process, providing valuable insights and support during both the planning and implementation phases. This collaborative approach has not only expedited the construction but also fostered a sense of ownership over the project, encouraging residents to maintain and protect the water supply system. Such involvement is crucial for the long-term sustainability of the initiative. The Manduwasa water supply scheme represents a transformative step toward enhancing the quality of life for its residents. The benefits—ranging from improved health and economic development to community empowerment—are increasingly evident and signal a brighter future for the villagers. This initiative serves as a testament to how targeted interventions can create ripples of positive change, ultimately transforming lives and livelihoods for the better.
